The original 2-8-2 Mikados were built in 1897 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in the U.S. for export to the narrow-gauge railway system in Japan. But during World War I, the United States Railroad Administration adopted the Mikado design as a standard, and more than a thousand "Mikes" were also made for more than a dozen American railways.
