The Prototype:
About a century ago, hundreds of small railroads were built in the mountains of America to help haul timber from the forests to the growing cities of the new nation. These logging lines were rugged, with steep grades, sharp curves and uneven track. Traditional steam locomotives were ill suited to these lines, because their big drive wheels would slip at the slightest provocation.
The Shay locomotive was a solution to that problem. Instead of a few, big drive wheels, a Shay has many, small drive wheels. Each wheel is connected to vertical steam cylinders by an intricate system of shafts and gears.
This arrangement limits Shays to slow speed operation, but in exchange, Shays could climb 10% grades, round 23 meter (75 foot) radius curves and negotiate poorly laid track.
From 1880 to 1944, the Lima Locomotive Works built more than 2,700 Shays.
